A gate is the hardest-working part of any boundary. It is the only part that moves, it carries its whole weight on two hinge points, and it is opened thousands of times a year. That means the posts matter more than the gate; a heavy driveway gate on undersized or shallow posts will drop, drag and stop latching within a season no matter how good the ironmongery.
Why professional installation matters
Hanging a gate square is a setting-out job. Post size and depth have to suit the leaf weight, the hinge side has to be dead plumb, the clearance at the bottom has to allow for ground fall, and the latch has to land where the gate naturally comes to rest rather than where it is forced to. Gate types we supply and hang
The right gate depends on the opening, the weight you want to move and how often it is used.
- Side and pedestrian gates, usually 0.9m–1.1m wide, framed and braced, lockable both sides.
- Garden gates, lower picket or matched closeboard gates within a fence run.
- Single driveway gates, wider leaves needing larger posts and heavier hinges.
- Double driveway and entrance gates, matched pair with drop bolt and centre stop, set out so both leaves meet cleanly.
- Metal gates, steel and wrought-iron style gates hung on suitable posts or piers.
- Composite and matched timber gates, built to sit inside a new fence run in the same board finish.

Posts, hinges and hardware
Gate posts are not fence posts. They are larger in section, set deeper, and concreted with the leaf weight and the leverage of the swing in mind. For heavier gates we will specify accordingly and explain why the post cost is higher than the run either side of it.
Ironmongery follows the same logic: band-and-gudgeon or heavy strap hinges for weight, adjustable hinges where ground movement is likely, and latches, slam plates, drop bolts and lockable options chosen for how you use the gate. Galvanised or coated hardware as standard, because a rusted hinge pin is a seized gate.
Clearance, ground fall and swing
Most gate complaints trace back to setting out. A gate hung level on ground that falls across its swing will catch at one end of its travel; a gate hung to follow the fall will look wrong against a level fence. We work out which compromise suits your opening and show you before it is fixed.
Bottom clearance is set to allow for paving, gravel movement and seasonal ground change. Swing direction is decided with you, which way it is safest to open, whether it must clear a step or a car, and whether it should be self-closing.

We do not install automated or electric gates, motors, intercoms or access control. If that is what you need, we will say so straight away rather than taking the job on.
